Update from Melbourne

first of all, i want to thank everyone for all the love and support that has been shown. i went to the hospital twice today, and the second time, paul's parents were starting to get emails that had been sent to the hopsital. It really meant a lot to them to see all those people loving their son. So thanks to all ya'll. In terms of updates, today was a pretty good day for paul. His vitals are stable and have been for 24 hrs. The swelling in his brain is down from yesterday, and still falling, which is a good thing. Also, just looking at him today was encouraging. When i first saw him a couple days ago, he was super swollen, and today you can see the color coming back in his face, and the swelling leaving. He's starting to be recognizeable as the paul we know and love again. The neuro doctors have decided to start to wake him up. I had a vision of this being a quick process, a couple hours kinda thing, but turns out i'm wrong. By waking him up they mean, slowly cutting the meds back and checking his response to stimulus. It takes a couple days aparently. But i saw him move more today in the hour i spent there, than i had in the last three days. So it was really encouraging. I'll try to keep ya'll posted as much as i can. Again, thanks for all the love. Keep it coming. His parents really apprecitate it, as do all of us over here.

  1. Sending best wishes and healing thoughts to Paul and his mom and dad. This is Pat at Pack Forest back in Washington. Having gone through a similar situation with my son a couple years ago, I can imagine your anxiety. It sounds as though there are friends offering support, which is wonderful. The best thing is that Paul is young and healthy...and he is surrounded by folks who love him. Take care, get rest, and tell Paul that we will be waiting to see him when he gets back.

  3. I really didn't need to get this news.

The past week has been filled with medical messiness. In addition to my dad having a small stroke, Lou Weber had to have her gall bladder out, Paul Bartels had to have an infected knee replacement removed, and Tom Lam' is finally having a cancerous prosate taken care of.. As disconcerting as all that was, thinking about you knuckleheads trying to cope out in the Australian rocks has gutted me more than any of that.

You know I'm not the last person to believe in any sort of power of prayer or that sort of thing, but here's the deal: you may have heard that at the beginning of summer WWC's communications director, JB, went down in a freak bike accident and suffered a head injury that sounds like it was even worse than Paul's. We only learned later that no one at the hospital thought he would ever wake up. We all kinda freaked and everyone dug in and connected in their own sort of way. Gradually he woke up, got better, went home, and by the first day of classes was back nearly fully recovered. It blew my mind. So I'm still not buying any of this supernatural stuff, but I've got to say, there is empirical evidence to support the hypothesis for some sort of Warren Wilson healing ju-ju. I'm still not a true believer, but I'm digging in for you and everyone else who you touched here is too.

With Kesi's permission, I'm going to adopt her language about the "need for a life that is based on taking care of those around you and having a really good time doing it" as part of the college's educational mission. Please accept all our love.
